Journey to Peace Corps
Although I began my Peace Corps Service in January of 2018, my journey to Peace Corps probably began in 2007. A missionary spoke at my church when I was young. While the details of her work and the subjects of her photography have faded with time from my memory, the seed she planted in my heart has only grown. Afterwards my mom and I were walking to the car when I told her that I wanted to be like the missionary – travel across the world and help people. She gently reminded me that there are people in need right here in our community. And so, I began serving my community.
It has taken me several years and experiences to understand what service looks like in its best form. Service looks like maintaining the dignity and agency of those served by meeting their self-proclaimed needs through the donated time and skills of a volunteer. Service looks like meaningful human connection and mutual respect. Service looks a lot like a Peace Corps Volunteer.
