Ram Dance

"The people here are beautiful; face, hair, body, and the impeccable sense of fashion. TAKE MORE PICS of fashion (however creepy)." - December 29, 2015

"Take more pics of fashion" I reminded myself in my journal from 2015 when I studied abroad in Thailand. Men and women's Thai fashion has captivated me for over two years now, from stylish outfits in the streets to traditional clothing worn at special events.

This postcard is my humble attempt at capturing some of the beauty of these outfits, specifically women dancing Ram. From my understanding, Ram is a very specific style of dance that can be performed on a stage and tell a story, or to any song an the radio with your best gals. At any event with any form of music, a Yai (grandma) is guaranteed to grab your wrist and walk you over to the circle of ram-dancing Yais. She will not let go until you start dancing. This has occurred to me many times, including on my birthday.

A rare lone dancing Yai at an event commemorating 108 years since the bombing and rebuilding of this bridge. She is accompanied a live band made up of traditional Thai instruments. It was only a few moments after these pictures were taken that several women joined in. And only a few moments after that that one of them pulled me in.

Here I am dancing Ram with the Nhy Amphoe (district governor) at the graduation and Songkran celebration for the elders in my community.

The interns and myself posing at the elderly school graduation in some of the trendy traditional outfits.

At the elderly school graduation with come of my Thai co-workers, and of course my little sister, Nadia.
