Sukhothai Marathon

Sukhothai in northern Thailand served as the first capitol of Thailand in the 13 and 14th centuries. The ruins of the royal palace and the city's 26 temples is now one of five UNESCO World Heritage sites in Thailand.

In a brilliant marketing and tourism move, Thailand hosts a four-part marathon at four of the World Heritage sites. The first one is in Sukhothai, where I went to cheer on my friends and fellow Peace Corps Volunteers, Laura and Diana. We will be traveling to Ayutthaya, Ban Chiang, and Khao Yai later this year to compete and collect all the medals that fit together as one ring.

Avoiding the tropical heat, the races began at dawn. Candles illuminated the ruins for a breathtaking view.

Most tourists rent bicycles to view the expansive park, but for us it was the backdrop to our race. Probably the most beautiful race backdrop I've had so far, if you knew me in High School you'll know that is saying something. Sorry Schultz Family Farm and Eau Claire Marathon...

I went as a spectator and attempted to channel my inner cross-country-dad by cheering for my friends as many times as possible along the course. I think it went well. Also, after running two half-marathons in Eau Claire, I know how motivating clever race signs can be. So I decided to make one and attempt to set a trend in Thailand.

"Roses are red, violets are blue, you're my FAVORITE runner, so here's a gold medal for you."
I think the other runners, mostly Thai nationals with a handful of foreigners, were surprised by my sign and loud cheerleader behavior. But I know my friends appreciated it, as well as every child who returned my smile and sprinted by.

I am looking forward to returning to Sukhothai with my parents later in October to explore more, take a guided tour, and learn more about the history of this beautiful world treasure.
